Such a heart warming story. So true and honest. I think anyone who has ever had any kind of pet, or animal could relate somewhat to this story. Even if they didn't before reading it, they will afterwards! It's so amazing what an animal can do for you.
This book was informative as well as heartwarming. I guess I never thought of what happens to horses that either don't win right away or can no longer race after such a short season. They are beautiful, valuable animals, and yet, where do they go to spend the majority of their lives after racing? This story is beautifully crafted to tell what happened to one special horse, who had a short racing career but so much more to offer. I am glad that there is a movement to help place these horses with loving homes, to live out their days bringing joy to their owner/new families!
I just finished reading Susan Acree's second book, and I wasn't disappointed!
She seems to have uncanny ability to feel what her horse feels and through patience, empathy, love and determination Bonus, a race horse, becomes the horse that she has dreamed of. The book is well written and easy to read. One feels her challenges as well as her successes in a very personal way. If you love horses, this book is for you!
I have had the awesome opportunity to observe Susan and her "Bonus horse" first hand. She has an amazing way and deep love for her animals. I recommend this book for anyone who has a love for horses. I have loved and lost a couple Equine pets myself and this story has brought back memories....great read....
This book is for anyone with a love of horses! A sweet story about overcoming grief by taking a chance to love an animal again. Susan not only comes to love Bonus for the charming boy that he is but is finally able to let go of her consuming grief at the loss of her beloved horse, Race. A talented writer who draws you into the story as you connect with her on a very emotional level. Having experienced the painful loss of a horse who was also a "family member" I was impressed with Susan's ability to share the raw emotion she felt and the tender way she came to love and protect Bonus. I am so glad she and Bonus were able to find each other and that I got to have a glimpse into their journey!
In the interest of full disclosure I guess I should admit, for all of you who have already read the book, that I am the person Susan got Bonus from. I have to say that it is a strange experience to read a book about a horse that I knew personally, but it was very interesting all the same. Being a fan and a participant of Thoroughbred horse racing, I appreciated the background pedigree information that Susan included, and although I am a student of pedigrees I learned some things I hadn't known! As I read about Susan's experiences with Bonus and her perspectives on those experiences it gave me something of a surreal feeling because we have such different ideas of what it means to have a relationship with a horse. Don't get me wrong--even though horses are our business we are often very fond of our horses and we always make sure they are well-cared for. Still, Susan displayed a level of commitment to Bonus that is rare, for she stayed committed to him even after it appeared that he was never going to be all that she hoped for in a horse. She chose to accept what she had and love him anyway, so I guess you could say that this was a story of unconditional love.
I have read both of Susan's books. If you have ever had a bond with a horse or any other animal, you will love "Our Bonus Horse" and "The Horses I've Loved." Susan bonded with Race and Bonus in different ways. I loved both of her books and I know you will too!
